The Brazilian Government has established new sanitary regulations for seafood products that are imported from Uruguay, which has caused serious inconveniences for the Uruguayan exporter.
Given this situation, the fishing industry – among other areas of the Uruguayan economy – are looking to the Executive branch to negotiate a swift solution.
The executives of the fishing sector appeal to the good “understanding” President-elect Jose Mujica maintains with the heads of state of Brazil and Venezuela to resolve some commercial blocks that have surfaced as of late, El Pais reports.
At this time, the authorisation to enter fresh fish from Uruguay into the Brazilian market is delayed by up to 15 days, which is why it is possible that the “business is at risk,” official sources indicated.
That delay took place when the Brazilian Government transferred all authorisation processing to the capital, Brasilia.
“A significant risk exists” that Uruguayan merchandise can lose its sanitary status, representatives of the fishing industry alert.
The impact of this situation is worsened by the fact that the highest volume sales of fresh fish to Brazil are made through mid-March, due to the celebration of the period of Cuaresma which precedes Easter.
Authorities of the ministries of Livestock of both countries will meet soon to discuss the matter, among others.
