Salmon exports in January reached NOK 1.8 billion (EUR 219.5 million). This is the highest salmon export value ever recorded for salmon and is NOK 260 million (EUR 31.7 million) up on January 2009, according to the Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSEC).
France, Poland and Russia are the biggest importers of salmon, and exports of fresh salmon fillets to the US showed a boost.
The export price of fresh salmon was NOK 29.16 (EUR 3.56) per kg, NOK 0.54 (EUR 0.07) higher than a year ago and NOK 0.19 (EUR 0.02) higher than in December 2009.
Salmon export growth was strongest in Asia and the US at 28 per cent and 276 per cent, respectively.
The German salmon market is the biggest after France and the UK. The value of direct exports to Germany increased by 26 per cent to NOK 98 million (EUR 12 million).
“January has been a strong month for exports of Norwegian clipfish to Brazil, with an increase of 3,000 tonnes compared to the same period last year,” said Egil Ove Sundheim, director of market information at NSEC. ”These are products that will be sold and consumed in connection with Brazil’s Easter celebrations. Strong demand for Norwegian Salmon also contributed to the growth in exports for the year to date.”

Exports of cod clipfish rose by 23 per cent to NOK 187 million (EUR 22.8 million) with the volume up by almost 50 per cent. Brazil showed a growth in value of 186 per cent to NOK 122 million (EUR 14.9 million) while value fell for Portugal by NOK 41 million (EUR 5 million), an almost 50 per cent-drop from January 2009.
Exports of salted whole cod also grew with a volume of 954 tonnes, up 45 per cent, although lower prices yielded only a 15 per cent-increase to NOK 30 million (EUR 3.7 million). Most exports went to Portugal and Spain.
The value of fjord trout exports declined by NOK 10 million (EUR 1.2 million) to NOK 125 million (EUR 15.2 million) due to a reduced volume of exports. The chief trout importers are Russia and China.
Herring exports reached NOK 473 million (EUR 57.7 million), down by NOK 71 million (EUR 8.7 million) or 13 per cent compared with January last year, due to a fall in price of 16 per cent to NOK 4.59 (EUR 0.56) per kg.
Mackerel exports fell by 16 per cent to NOK 163 million (EUR 19.9 million) also due to reduced prices. Compared with January 2009, the price fell by 24 per cent to NOK 9.43 (EUR 1.15) per kg.
The value of exports of fjord trout totalled NOK 125 million (EUR 15.2 million), down by about NOK 10 million (EUR 1.2 million) compared with January 2009. Export volume was also down by 899 tonnes to 3,672 tonnes. The most important markets were Russia and China.
